cayugaThis is a special project, because it was born and has been established out of a shared dream between the Salvadoran community of San Pedro and their sister community in Cayuga County in the state of New York. When the people of San Pedro identified housing for some of their poorest families as one of their most central priorities for development in their community, the folks in Cayuga revealed that supporting vocational training and communal construction of dignified housing in San Pedro had been a topic discussed among their community as well. Working with a Salvadoran architect experienced in ancestral building methods like adobe and bajareque as well as modern techniques to make those structures safer and more durable, the sister communities have agreed on a design and a methodology to start construction! We are excited about this project, as it demonstrates a real community-based approach to development and is a beautiful example of two communities creating a project together.
lucianoAs the project has been hashed out and the first group of houses to be repaired and built has been selected, the sister community group approached FACES about the possibility of expanding the project to other communities in the area, some with sister communities and some without. We hope that the experience in San Pedro can serve as an encouraging example of this kind of project and that we will be able to support the construction of ecological, dignified housing in other communities in the area.
